Directory submission compared · checked 29 Oct 2026
List your site on directories or exchange links in content?
Directory submission puts a listing for your product on launch platforms, startup directories and tool catalogs. You can submit by hand or pay a service such as ListingBott or BacklinkBot to submit to about 100 directories for you. It is mostly a one-off job around a launch, and each directory decides whether to list you and how it links.
LinkBunny does a different job. It exchanges contextual nofollow links inside relevant articles and docs on participating sites, and your coding agent keeps handling requests after launch. The two don't compete: many sites submit to directories at launch and add contextual links later.

Do it yourself
A handful of good directories
Submitting to a short list by hand costs time, not money, and lets you write each listing well.
Pay a service
Volume without the busywork
ListingBott and BacklinkBot submit to about 100 directories for a one-off fee. You still review the list and the copy.
LinkBunny may fit
Ongoing links in relevant content
After launch, your coding agent can handle exchange requests on your site. The first exchange is free.
At a glance
Listings and contextual links are different things
A directory listing is a profile page about your product on someone else's catalog. An exchanged link sits in an article or doc page on a related site. You can do both.
| Decision field | Directory submission | LinkBunny |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A listing page for your product on each accepted directory | A link inside relevant content on a participating site |
| When it fits | Mostly at launch, as a one-off round | Ongoing, one request at a time |
| Link attribute | Set by each directory. LinkBunny's own listings on AlternativeTo and BuiltByIndies use nofollow; ProgrammerNeeds uses ugc. | nofollow required |
| What you do | Prepare copy and assets, submit, follow up on approvals | Approve the placements your coding agent prepares |
| Price | Free by hand. BacklinkBot: free ranked list, or $99 per site to submit to 100+. ListingBott: 100 listings, $299 beta price. | First exchange free for one site, no card. Then $20/month for up to 10 active sites, no per-link fee. |
| Timing | BacklinkBot: most submitted in 5–7 business days. ListingBott: up to 5 weeks, indexing can take up to 2 months. | No date or quantity guarantee |
| Traffic | Some directories send visitors, especially launch platforms | Readers of the linking article may click through; no traffic promise |
Service prices, timings and guarantees are from each provider's public page on 29 October 2026 and were not independently tested.

How each workflow works
A submission round and an exchange
A directory round has a clear end. LinkBunny keeps running as long as you check in.
DIRECTORY_ROUNDDirectories
- 1Pick directories
Choose a short list yourself, or let a service rank directories for your product.
- 2Prepare the listing
Write the tagline, description and category, and collect a logo and screenshots.
- 3Submit
Submit by hand, or hand the list to a service. Some directories need an account or a launch date.
- 4Check listings
Confirm each listing went live and note how it links to you.
EXCHANGE_ASSIGNMENTLinkBunny
- 1Add your site
Your coding agent uses the Skill, MCP or API to register the target page and the part of your site where it can place links. LinkBunny reviews the site.
- 2Check in
The agent asks for one placement request. The response can be a request or nothing suitable yet.
- 3Place a nofollow link
The agent finds a spot in relevant content and shows you the proposed
nofollowlink. You approve it before it goes live, or the agent rejects the request. - 4Verify and report
The agent checks the live link and reports it. Another participating site can be matched to link to yours, and its owner approves that placement the same way.

Pricing and value boundaries
What each option costs
Directory services charge once per round. LinkBunny is free for the first exchange, then monthly.
By hand
$0
Your time. Paid features or priority slots on individual directories cost extra.
BacklinkBot
$99 per site
Submission by hand to 100+ directories. 3 sites $199, 5 sites $249. A ranked list of 100 is free if you submit yourself. Refunded in full if they cannot deliver.
ListingBott
$299
100 hand-picked directories, published over a month, with a report. Beta price, shown struck through from $499.
LinkBunny
Free, then $20/month
The first exchange is free for one site, with no card: one placement from your site and one link to it, in either order. After that, the founding plan is $20/month for up to 10 active sites with no per-link fee. Some check-ins return no request.

Agent, API and automation
What the services and your agent handle
Both directory services describe a human team doing the submissions. LinkBunny gives your coding agent the exchange work instead.
Directory services
- BacklinkBot: a person reads each directory's rules, picks the category and writes the description.
- ListingBott: AI agents and its team pick directories from its database, then listings are published daily over a month.
- Both send you a list or report of where you were submitted.
LinkBunny
- Your coding agent registers your site through the Skill, MCP or API.
- It checks in, assesses a request and shows you the
nofollowplacement. - It publishes after your approval, verifies the link and reports it.

Link qualification and publication
Directory links vary; exchanged links are nofollow
Directories decide their own link attributes, and many use nofollow or ugc. LinkBunny requires nofollow.
LinkBunny link
Each link is contextual and nofollow. Your agent rejects requests with no suitable context.
Directory listing
Each directory sets its own rel value and review rules. Check every live listing rather than trusting a service's dofollow count.
- ListingBott states a Domain Rating guarantee for new sites. Domain Rating is an Ahrefs metric, not a Google ranking signal.
- Google's link-spam policy covers low-quality directory and bookmark links. Pick directories people use.
- No listing or exchanged link guarantees indexing, traffic, rankings or AI mentions.

Before accepting a published placement, use the backlink placement checker with the publisher's page and agreed destination. Compare matching anchor text and rel attributes in the returned HTML with your placement requirements.
Site-owner scenarios
Pick by where the site is
Directory submission and an exchange fit different stages.
Do it yourself
Launch week for a new tool
Submit to a short list of launch directories and plan around their launch days. Start from the nine launch directories that worked for LinkBunny's maker.
Pay a service
Busy founder with several products
Pay for a 100-directory round per product and spend the saved hours on the product.
LinkBunny may fit
Site with content, months after launch
Listings are done. The site has docs and articles, and the founder wants contextual links handled by Claude Code or Codex.
Choose by operating model
When to submit to directories, when to use LinkBunny
Most sites can do both, at different times.
Use LinkBunny if
- Your site has content where relevant links fit.
- You want your coding agent to handle ongoing exchange requests.
nofollowlinks fit your goals.
Submit to directories if
- You are launching and want to be listed where people browse new tools.
- You can write a solid listing once and reuse it.
- You check each directory before submitting.
Skip both if
- You need guaranteed rankings, traffic or AI mentions.
- You want links mainly to manipulate rankings.
Important limitations and unknowns
What this comparison cannot settle
- Directory service prices and counts change often. ListingBott's price was a beta price on 29 October 2026.
- Which directories send visitors depends on your product; the launch directory list is one maker's experience, not a ranking.
- Link attributes listed here for LinkBunny's own listings were checked on those pages and can change.
- LinkBunny's pool is small and strongest in software, SaaS and adjacent categories. A check-in can return no request.
